LOOKISS Gallery in Kuala Lumpur, presents Ad Lib, a solo exhibition by artist Janiz Chan.
The exhibition, which began on March 28, ends April 25. It is presented by Lookiss in collaboration with legal firm Shearn Delamore And Company.
Ad Lib contains 13 contemporary paintings in oil on canvas that explore the moods, emotions and moments in time of Malaysian women.
Sticking to women as her subject, Chan moves away from smooth and detailed paintings that emphasise pictorial perfection towards a more soulful expression with liberated brushstrokes and improvised colours.
Born in 1966 in Tanjung Malim, Perak, Chan graduated with a degree in graphic design from the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1987. Her paintings in oil, pastel and acrylic are popular with art lovers, especially overseas collectors and Malaysians living abroad, many of whom are enchanted by her Asian themes, joyful colours and nostalgic play of light.
The gallery aims to promote Malaysian fine art and quality picture frames. It specialises in contemporary Malaysian paintings by both established and emerging artists. For that purpose, Lookiss organises monthly art exhibitions featuring such artists. Lookiss believes that Malaysian art is not merely “art by Malaysians”, but art which taps the traditions of Malaysia’s Indian, Chinese and Indigenous communities, and which sometimes blends them with West Asian and European styles, to produce original masterpieces.
The gallery also believes that Malaysian art is works by artists, regardless of ethnicity or origin, who have chosen as their subject and inspiration the beauty, colours, styles and poetic expressions of Malaysia.
Shearn Delamore is a strong supporter of Malaysian art and is committed to promoting the rich, artistic traditions of Malaysia’s multi-ethnic society. A diverse collection of outstanding fine art paintings by Malaysians are displayed at the company’s offices in Lebuh Ampang, KL. Paintings are rotated on a bimonthly basis.
The exhibition’s launch on March 28 was attended by Lookiss director Kerk Boon Leng, Chan, Shearn Delamore partners Jeyanthini Kannaperan and Datuk Johari Razak and managing partner Wong Sai Fong.
